Tim Wakefield is going to be a whole lot happier tonight. The Red Sox have reacquired catcher Doug Mirabelli from the San Diego Padres. Hopefully Doug will hopefully help to produce some runs for Wake as well (even though he is only batting .182 this season). Apparently, Jonathan Papelbon took a page straight from Major League. Jonathan made a bet with Kevin Youkilis that he would not be able to pitch for 10 innings without giving up an earned run. Well, thankfully for the Sox, he lost this bet last night vs. the Blue Jays and made it past the 10-inning mark without an earned run. With this said, Papelbon is now sporting a very stylish mohawk.

Let's face it, this ain't your granfather's Sox anymore. Unlike Red Sox teams of old that were offensive powerhouses, this 2006 team is build on pitching. Curt Schilling last night was amazing, lights-out, ridiculously good. It's so nice to see him bounce back and pitch with confidence again. Curt should open a landscaping business with the way he was mowing down Mariners last night (8 innings pitched, 7 strike outs, 1 earned run). Josh Beckett has posted similarly fantastic numbers early on in the season and has gotten us all excited that he will excel in the moisture-free, blister-free Boston climate. Early signs also show that Tim Wakefield will be the "sometimes inconsistent but I'd rather have him on my team than not" pitcher of the past. He's a great workhorse who'll win more games than he loses. And I really can't say enough about Jonathan Papelbon. The guy has been an absolute stud, dominating the opposing batters in all 5 of his saves.

With all of this in consideration, the Sox will inevitably run into problems when the pitching is less than superb. David Wells looked horrible on Wednesday. I hope that his problems really are caused by a sprained knee and that 15 days on the DL will be enough to get him back to old form. I also experienced Vernon Well's grand slam off of Matt Clement first hand on Thursday night. Let's just say that it was a great time to check out all the changes to Fenway Park during the rest of Clement's performance. Middle relief has been marginal at best, and could get shakier if Papelbon is forced to get shifted to starter and Foulke back to closer.

Oh, and by the way, the AL leader in wins is Curt Schilling (with 3), the AL leader in ERA is Josh Beckett (with 1.29), and the AL leader in saves is Jonathan Papelbon (with 5). If Clement and Wells can step it up (and/or if #21 is pitching for our boys come May/June) this team is going to be nasty! This season is definitely all about the pitching.

Coco's going to be a sox player for at least 3 more years. Granted he has yet to play a game at Fenway, but he seems to be fitting in very well with the team. After 5 games with the Sox, he already has 8 hits, 2 stolen bases, a broken knuckle, and a blog dedicated to him. One of the most feared clutch hitters in the game, Ortiz is also a great face for the organization. Everyone loves Big Papi (well, except for opposing pitchers). It is great that Red Sox brass stepped up to the plate and recognized this before it was too late. The team realizes what an asset David is and was not willing to let him slip away. Papi's happy. The Sox are happy. The fan's are happy. Everything's coming up Milhouse!

That's basically what's going on down in DC. In order to make room for the Nationals stadium, the city is tearing down a whole lotta gay bars on 'O' street. Now, I've never been here before, but it definitely sounds like quite a seedy, Montreal's St. Catherine's St. style neighborhood, complete with go-go dancers, a "health club", and a "movie theater".

In order to better understand the fury of the neighborhood gay boys and girls, the Washington Post quotes Xavier: "Now they're going to build a baseball stadium here. And what are we going to do when it's done? Burn it down! That's right! We are gonna burn! It! Down! . . . [Bleep] baseball! Who gives a [bleep] about baseball?"
Don't mess with Xavier. He's crazy man...crazy. I think he just lost his red swingline stapler....

Well, since Idol is down to the Top Nine, and the Sox also happen to be sending nine men up to the plate tonight, I figure that it's only natural to see which lineup is favored:

**Kellie Pickler vs. Coco Crisp**

Winner: Coco Crisp
Pickler just flat out annoys me. The girl can definitely sing, but her ignorance is brutal. "Saaaalllmon!" Come on girl. Coco, on the other hand, dazzled us yesterday with an amazing catch and had some nice hits at the top of the order.

**Paris Bennett vs. Mark Loretta**

Winner: Paris Bennett
Mark Loretta was great yesterday, and he is an awesome fit as second in the line-up. Unfortunately, today he's gonna be outdone by a sparkling 16 year old. Paris has got a great voice, she's an entertainer, and she's got personality. You rock Paris!

**Mandisa vs. David Ortiz**

Winner: David Ortiz
Big Papi vs. Big Girl. Mandisa has been one of my pre-season favorite Idols. When she sings, I am simply in awe. Her voice is powerful and she always looks like she's having fun on stage. But Big Papi is Mr. Clutch. He is unquestionably THE man. Starting opening day with a triple shy of the cycle, this guy has already kicked it up to mid-season form. Hey Theo, why doesn't he have a contract extension yet?

**Chris Daughtry vs. Manny Ramirez**

Winner: Chris Daughtry
This is closest match-up of them all. I may get some criticism for my choice, but I simply love Chris' rendition of Johnny Cash's 'Walk the Line'. I love Manny for being Manny, but Chris hasn't asked to leave the show to sign with 'Star Search'.

**Taylor Hicks vs. Trot Nixon**

Winner: Taylor Hicks
This was also a close competition, but Taylor sang one of my favorite songs last week (Ray Lamontagne's 'Trouble'). This alone pushed him ahead of Trot. I may have to reassess this contest towards mid-season, especially if Trot stays healthy.

**Katharine McPhee vs. Jason Varitek**

Winner: Jason Varitek
Katharine McPhee has a great voice and consistently wins me over. But she's up against stiff competition in Captain V-Tek. Katherine is a wannabee Idol whereas Varitek is already an Idol in my heart.

**Ace Young vs. Mike Lowell**

Winner: Mike Lowell
Hey, matching 1/8th of all the home runs he hit last year in one game has to count for something. Besides, Ace isn't even that cute.

**Elliott Yamin vs. Kevin Youkilis**

Winner: Kevin Youkilis
I just like saying Yooooooooook. He went 0-4 yesterday, but it's one game. Elliott just seems average. He's a good singer but nothing spectacular. Yooooooooooooook!

**Bucky Covington vs. Alex Gonzalez**

Winner: Alex Gonzalez
A-Gon's bat was pretty good yesterday (we won't talk about his base running but again, it's one game) Alex's defense is amazing. Bucky is a one tune singer. He'll probably do well tonight, since it's country night, but he'll soon be gone.

So, based on this sound statistical analysis, it looks like the Sox line-up beats the Idol line-up 6-3. But let's face it, we have 161 games left in the season! I'll probably still end up watching Idol!

The Red Sox traded pitcher Bronson Arroyo to the Cincinnati Reds today for outfielder Wily Mo Pena. As difficult as it is to see Bronson get traded, I think that this was an inevitable move by the Sox. With a surplus of pitching, someone had to go. I know a lot of people don't think very highly of Matt Clement, but I think that he has the capability to be lights out. Bronson, on the other had, will be a solid 4 or 5 guy in a rotation and probably not much more than that.

And if anything, the Sox unloading another pitcher may mean that they are even more serious about getting Clemens....time to fire up the hot stove again!

The Sox made a great move today by extending Terry Francona's contract through 2008. Terry has been a solid force for the Sox ever since he came aboard. Like most Boston fans, I have sometimes questioned his moves, but I don't think that we give him credit for one of the most difficult jobs in the MLB (Little, Kerrigan, Williams, Kennedy, Hobson, Morgan, McNamara can all tell you that!) Terry brought Boston the much needed championship rain after the long drought. But above all the nostalgia of 2004, Terry Francona is the best man to lead the Sox in 2006, 2007 and 2008. I am confident that the Sox will be in contention with Terry at the helm.

Holy Shirt!!! Sleeveless Millar

So everyone has their Red Sox traditions. My friends and I wear shirts.

Exhibit A: Sleeveless Millar

This shirt isn't really a Kevin Millar shirt. In fact, it is just a red, sleeveless Sox shirt. But over time, and after many trips to 'Beer Express' behind home plate, it has been affectionately called 'Sleeveless Millar'.

Here's a quick Q & A with the wearer of Sleeveless Millar so that we can attempt to understand its mystery:

What is it about 'Sleeveless Millar' that gives it its power to help the Red Sox?
Good things happened when I wore that shirt. I think I even got laid a couple of times with it on. In general, it is good to wear Red Sox gear at the game (that way people know that you are not a secret Yankees fan).

*second editorial addition - the missed connection was at the Eagle.
*third editiorial addition - he did not reply to the missed connection.

Are there any notable games when you have worn 'Sleeveless Millar'?
'Sleeveless Millar' had a great run. It was indeed this red sleevelss shirt that propelled the Sox into several wins in 2004, including Patriots Day and that day game where I got a sunburn on my feet. (Kevin Millar hit a home run that day too!) It then propelled us through the Mueller HR off Riveira game in July, which included the Varitek-Arod fight. It was then worn through the first round of the playoffs but abandoned for Ol' Red after the 0-3 deficit to the Yankees. Ol' Red did not lose for the rest of the 2004 playoffs.

What are you going to do now that Millar is on the Orioles?
Because I was smart enough to NOT purchase a shirt that had Kevin Millar's name on it, I don't think it will be an issue.

Are any new shirts going to make appearances at Fenway this season?
I am constantly on the lookout for a new lucky shirt, but this is impossible to predict. Clearly, being fashionable is not a prerequisite for being a lucky shirt. It would be nice if I could come up with a Coco Crisp related shirt, but you really can't force these things.

So, while Jon and his Sexy boyfriend are in Paris (notice the sexy with a capital "C"!), I have been given the power of updating the Gay Sox blog--yeah, pretty big responsibility, but I know I'm up to it!

Over the past few days, I've spent a great deal of time in front of my new HDTV! And, on Friday, I watched "Faith Rewarded" to get me pumped up for the Sox season. Having HDTV gives me new insights into the Sox, and I feel as though I can see them now better than ever.

State of the Nation

On the night of President Bush's State of the Union address, I thought it would be interesting to assess the state of Red Sox Nation.

Defense
The 2006 Boston Red Sox will be a much better defensive team. Mark Loretta, Alex Gonzalez, Mike Lowell, and Coco Crisp will all be defensive improvements over last year's Sox. Kevin Youkilis is yet to be proven at first base but will be platooned with gold glove winner J.T. Snow. Manny will be Manny; Trot will be Trot; and Varitek will be Captain. The Sox will be an elite defensive team next season.

Offense
Last season, the Sox were MLB leaders in runs scored (910), hits (1579), doubles (339), RBI (863), batting average (.281), OBP (.357), and OPS (.811). Those are simply crazy offensive numbers and frankly, offense isn't what makes world champions! Take the 2005 World Champion Chicago White Sox as an example. They only cracked the top ten in MLB in one offensive category last season (5th in the majors for home runs). The Red Sox are going to take a step back offensively next season. Coco Crisp and Alex Gonzalez will most likely not provide the offense that Johnny Damon and Edgar Renteria provided. Mike Lowell and Kevin Youkilis are question marks. With this said, the Sox can afford to lose a little pop from their bats next season and still be quite fine.

Pitching
On paper, Red Sox pitching has improved all around. First of all, we have an abundance of starting pitchers (Schilling, Beckett, Papelbon, Wakefield, Clement, Wells, Arroyo). This depth is a great advantage, especially considering Schilling's & Beckett's health concerns and Clement's drop in performance in the second half of last season. Julian Tavarez, Rudy Seanez and David Riske are nice, experienced additions to the bullpen, providing some solid set-up men for the 6th & 7th innings. A healthly Keith Foulke is an important part of a successful Sox team, especially with the expected drop in offense. Let's hope that the successful mantra of "Timlin in the 8th; Foulke in th 9th" is revived in 2006. The lack of left handed pitchers is a bit worrisome (the only lefties on the roster are Abe Alvarez, Lenny DiNardo, and David Wells), especially since they gave up two of our left-handed specialists in Myers and Bradford. Ultimately, it will all come down to pitching next season. A healthy staff will propel this team into the playoffs.

The offseason has been very busy for the nation. "Tonight the state of our union is strong." It's going to be an exciting 2006!

After weeks of the hot stove rumor mill working overtime, the Boston Red Sox have finally landed their man. Coco Crisp will be sporting a Red Sox jersey for the 2006 season and beyond. Crisp was by far the best available option for the Sox outfield. He fits both of the holes left by Johnny Damon (center field and leadoff hitter) and will cost the Sox somewhere around $32 million less over four years. He's energetic and has a name that Sox nation will fall in love with. I can only imagine the shirts that they'll be selling around Fenway next season!

Welcome Back Theo!!

Our favorite GM is returning to our favorite ball team. It was announced today that Theo Epstein will be returning to the Red Sox in a "full-time baseball operations capacity". The Sox released the following statement:
"As you know, we have spoken frequently during the last 10 weeks. We have engaged in healthy, spirited debates about what it will take over the long-term for the Red Sox to remain a great organization and, in fact, become a more effective organization in philosophy, approaches and ideals. Ironically, Theo’s departure has brought us closer together in many respects, and, thanks to these conversations, we now enjoy the bonds of a shared vision for the organization’s future that did not exist on October 31. With this vision in place, Theo will return to the Red Sox in a full-time baseball operations capacity, details of which will be announced next week.”
If we could have only been a fly on the wall during some of those conversations! It's pretty much popular belief that Theo is the best man for the head job of baseball operations. It's also very promising to see that John Henry and/or Larry Lucchino were able to do what's best for the ball club and "keep the door open" for Theo. Theo's back....now let's hope that he can find us a center fielder and a short stop!

Mark Loretta is going to look good at second base next season. Loretta is a career .301 hitter and is a solid defensive addition to the Sox infield. He is also very patient while at the plate and will hopefully push up the pitch count on that elderly pitching staff from the Bronx. Now if we could only find someone to play at short next to him!

Rookie Flashback - David Arias-Ortiz

So who is Big Papi, international man of mystery? Apparently our favorite Red Sox player is the man of many names. D.O. doesn't have a rookie card, but D.A. does. Senor Papi's full name is David Americo Arias-Ortiz. As his rookie card shows, I guess he used to go by David Arias. Anyone else up for starting a David Arias chant at Fenway this season?

Our GM's by committee have apparently solved one of the big questions for next season - first base. As of now, the Red Sox will be platooning Kevin Youkilis and J.T. Snow. I really like this situation and it will be great to see Youk playing on a regular basis. I predict that this season, Youkilis will shed his nickname of the past, "The Greek God of Walks", and adopt a new nickname: "The Hungarian God of Hits". (Kevin isn't even Greek!) Youkilis had a 0.8051 OPS in 2005, compared with Millar's 0.7532. Granted Youkilis had fewer at bats but when you incorporate his bats from Pawtucket, his OPS rises to 0.967. In comparison, Manny's OPS his rookie year was 0.502. I am by no means assuring that Youkilis is going to become a Ramirez-type hitter (it's waaaaay too early for that), but it is great to see such solid numbers for a rookie. Add into the picture an OBP hovering around .400, Youkilis isn't going to look too shabby in a line-up batting before Big Papi and Ramirez.

Gay Red Sox fans apparently don't like big TV's

What's the deal with this? I was looking on Amazon.com today and found a list called "Gifts for the Gay Boston Red Sox Fan". It is definitely a little cheesy, mixing up Red Sox history books with scandalous titles like "Changing Pitches (a classic adult novel about an aging pitcher and a hotshot young catcher)". The list also has an awesome 50 inch Phillips HDTV, or in the words of the author "a great big outta the ballpark shootyerload TV so he can watch his Red Sox Games at home". Sweet!

But apparently Red Sox fans aren't as obsessed with size as LA Dodgers fans. According to the list called "Gifts for the Gay Los Angeles Dodgers Fan", a gay Dodger fan needs to get a 60 inch HDTV! Come on guy! Just because Dodger Stadium is bigger than Fenway Park, it doesn't mean that us Sox fans don't like our big TVs.

Sign Roger Clemens, please!

I know, I know. Deep down inside, I was hoping that Nomar Garciaparra would be our shortstop / first baseman this year. But no, he signed with the Dodgers. Yes, I also really want Ichiro to be our center fielder this year, but I know it really doesn't make sense for Seattle to trade their greatest player / reliable cash cow. (It's even questionable as to whether Ichiro would make the switch over from right.)
Beyond those unrealistic dreams of a biased sox fan, there is one signing this off-season that really would make sense: the Sox need to sign Roger Clemens.

Here's why it makes sense for the Sox:

The Sox have extra cash from the lack of a Johnny Damon signing.
Roger Clemens led all started pitches in MLB last year with a 1.87 ERA over 32 games and 211 innings pitched. Great pitching defines a great team.
By signing Roger, the Sox would be able to use either Bronson Arroyo or Matt Clement as trade material to address the team's gaping holes, easing Ben & Jed's temptation to blow up the farm system.
Roger would be a great mentor for young pitchers like Jonathan Papelbon, Jon Lester, Manny Delcarmen, and Craig Hansen.
The entire Red Sox Nation is in love with Mr. Clemens. The signing would provide some much needed positive press for the boys on Yawkey Way. Fans would go balistic whenever he pitches. He could lose every single game and still be the greatest gift to

Here's why it makes sense for Roger Clemens:

The Sox would be (and need to be) willing to work with Roger's schedule (i.e.- not having to travel with the team, fewer starts, etc.). First of all, he's a 43 year-old family man. Second to that, he's a guy who still wants to play baseball.
Clemens would be able to have his number retired at Fenway with lots of pomp and circumstance. How great would #21 look on the wall of Fenway Park?
Roger already has a proven track record at Fenway, a ballpark which usually favors hitters.
Mr. Clemens would finish his career off at the top, solidifying himself as a superstar in Red Sox Nation. (What pinstripes?)
Roger has kept a lot of his New England ties.
I'd take him out to dinner.

Hot Off-season Sox Moves

The Sox brass have already had a busy off-season but there is still a lot of work to be done. If the season were to start today, the Sox would have three major holes in their line-up: center field, shortstop, and first base. (Since Manny is a signed player, I am going ahead as if he is our left fielder.) With this said, what should GM's by committee Ben & Jed do?

2006 Centerfielder for the Boston Red Sox: Andy Roddick

First and foremost, he has waaaay more sex appeal than Johnny Damon.
In 2005, he earned $1.8 million. He'd be a great bargain on John Henry's payroll!
He holds the record for the fastest serve ever recorded (150 mph). Just think of all those 150mph home runs screeching out of Fenway.
We all know he can hit a ball. He can probably catch a ball too. But if not, he's at least hot.

2006 First Baseman for the Boston Red Sox: Jeremy Bloom

He has already played college football and is an olympic freestyle skiier....why can't he play baseball too?
He holds the record for the longest punt return in Big XII championship history and the record for the longest touchdown reception in University of Colorado history. He'll definitely fly around those bases at Fenway with all that speed.
He won't go around yelling 'Cowboy Up' or selling Kentucky Fried Chicken.
He skis in moguls. If there was any doubt to begin with, this should clearly show that he's qualified play first base. But if not, he's at least hot.

2006 Short Stop for the Boston Red Sox: Tom Brady

Tom played baseball in college and was even drafted by the Montreal Expos.
3 championships in 4 years or 1 championship in 87 years? You chose.
The Super Bowl MVP is a proven leader and class act.
Unlike Edgar, Tom can play under the scrutiny of Boston's fans and provide the consistency necessary at the most important infield position. But if not, he's at least hot. :-)

Here's an email conversation between me and my boyfriend from earlier today concerning our favorite center fielder. I'll put my comments in BLUE and his in PINK. ;-)

Haha...I don't agree with them at all, except for the fact that they now have to overpay for Jeremy Reed or whoever they get

Steeply overpay for a center fielder
Lose pitching (they are going to need to give up Arroyo or Clement for a center fielder)
To top it all off, the Yankees get stronger, and they are within the division! Center field was a weak part of the their line-up last year...it no longer is.

You can't say that... Johnny, along with Posada, Jeter, Arod and Sheffield are all another year
older. Is Johnny better than Bernie Williams? Without a doubt. Does this make the Yankees prohibitive favorites? I don't think so.
Pitching is still the key. As for the Sox, we can't judge the impact till a replacement is in
place. If they trade Wells for Dave Roberts and get Glaus from Arizona, you can then make the argument that they are actually better than last year. Trying to predict what they are going to do is not worth it. Also Clement and/or Arroyo were not and are not long for this team with or
without Damon.

The Yankees are a better team with Johnny Damon as their center fielder instead of Bernie Williams or Bubba Crosby. Despite overpaying (when has that EVER been an issue for the Yanks?), they will have offensive production from the top of their line-up and they didn't have to give anything up for it.
The Sox are a worse team with Jeremy Reed (they'll have to give up Clement or Arroyo and Reed is no way near the caliber of Damon), Coco Crispies (they'll have to give up Clement+prospect or Arroyo+prospect), Dave Roberts (he's the same age as Damon and has much less offensive production), Torri Hunter (bye-bye lots or prospects and pitching!!)
I'm by no mean a huge Johnny Damon fan, but the fact that he went to the Yankees is the issue. Granted a lot will change before spring training...I'm just not as optimistic today as I was yesterday.

Yes, but you didn't look at the pitching staff. Also one thing a team must assume is that one of its starters will have an injury. The Yankees do not have the ability to make moves when this happens, if it is Damon or Sheffield (both have bad shoulders; Sheff's are really bad), or someone else. The one thing money cannot do is get a player healthy. The Sox have people they can trade when/if this happens and they have more depth.
I agree that the Yanks offense is much better on paper as of today. What I am not willing to concede is that this means the Yanks are a MUCH better team. Offense was not the problem of either team last year. Last year only 3 teams in the AL scored more than 800 runs

2.) Yankees 886
3.) Texas 865
So even with Bernie in center and Giambi getting off to a horrific start, they still did just fine scoring runs. Also, Damon does not replace Bernie (he is still projected to DH). He replaces Tino Martinez (1B).
The Yankees lineup isn't this new crazy offense...they are improved. Look at the Red Sox lineup from last year and do the same analyses you just did (what player would you rather have).
I bet last year the Yankees would have had the edge at most if not all positions as well, yet the Sox still led the league in runs.

All of my friends thought I was crazy for holding onto that minute chance that Nomar Garciaparra would re-sign with the Sox. It turns out they were right, as Nomar will be playing first base for the Los Angeles Dodgers next year. But come on, how great would it have been? A former Sox all-star jumpstarting his career back at Fenway! The good news is that he only signed a one-year deal with LA ....Nomar back at Fenway in 2007?
